nothing is open
nowhere to go

he really has bad timing
he broke up with
his girlfriend of 7 years
two weeks before the shit
hit the fan

she wanted more from him
and he wanted less of her
talking about how soon
she would be too old to have babies
he didn't even want kids
he probably should have told
her that from the get go

now he will just be alone
until he gets the virus
and then he will die alone
or end up a zombie
she probably has already met and married
the father of her future children
they are probably living in
some suburban neighborhood
fucking like rabbits so they can replenish
the dying population with all their babies

no point in quitting smoking now
Joe lights a cigarette
alternate his drags with bites of cold pizza

he can't remember the last time
he changed his clothes
laundry mat is probably closed anyway
he wonders if she misses him
or if she thought he was too much of an asshole
to think of him at all
he used to make her smile
what is the use of thinking about this now?
he changes the channel to take a break
from the the growing death toll
he settles on The Walking Dead
then wonders why he doesn't own a machete

 maybe she should call him

stuck in this hotel room
the day the earth stood still
news is on in the lobby
hotel employees hide when she appears
everyone is afraid

she flew on a plane just three days
ago and now all this
in quarantine she feels fine
is that a tickle in her throat?

she probably won't be having children anytime soon
she suddenly remembers that the man behind her on the plane was coughing the whole flight
he is probably dead now
in one of those body bags they show on the news

she looks down at her plate of food
suddenly not hungry
what if they run out of food at the hotel and she wastes away in this room?

she forces herself to eat several bites of the hamburger opens the bottle of complimentary wine they gave her when she was told she couldn't leave

she flips through the channels
wanting anything but more news
she wonders what he is doing now
does he miss her?
does he realize what an asshole he was?
she stops on some zombie show
she hates zombies
that is what will come next
zombies
she checks to see if her door is locked just in case
she never thought a plague would come either

she doesn't even have a gun
or a knife or pepper spray
her mom put pepper spray
in her stocking one year for Christmas
and she had thought my mom
is so over protective
she left it in the drawer of her childhood dresser before returning
to college

what she really needs is a machete
she watches the woman slice up zombies
eats some fries and drinks the wine
she is going to end up calling him
maybe he will change his mind
and they can repopulate the earth
with their babies
